Iris Diane Palma is a Taurus who loves all things beautiful. Iris caught up with The Scope to discuss her career as a graphic designer, how reading horoscopes reminds her of childhood, finding creative fulfillment, and the ultimate party playlist. (Remember parties?)
What are your big 3 – Sun, Moon, and Rising signs?
Sun in Taurus, Moon in Virgo, Rising in Pisces. I feel like this encapsulates me perfectly. Also, I've never met a Moon in Virgo that I didn't like.
What do you do for work? Does your sign play into your career at all?
I’m a graphic designer and I run two Instagram accounts: @label.stable, where I curate funny and ridiculous vintage labels, and my newest account is @flowersincinema, where I share flower arrangements from all of the films I’ve seen. My sign plays into my career, for sure! Tauruses love beauty above all else, so being in a creative field where visuals are so important is really fun.
How, if at all, does astrology impact your daily life? Do you read your horoscope?
Growing up my aunt would grab the newspaper to read the horoscope section – it was her daily morning ritual with me. She would read hers (she was a Scorpio), then mine. Reading my horoscope is something I still enjoy doing. It’s just fun for me and I love reading my friends' horoscopes as well.
What's your favorite holiday? (Yes, your birthday counts as a holiday!)
New Years Eve! It's so cliché, but I love the feeling of a clean start and the anticipation of the countdown to midnight with all my friends and loved ones around.
We all miss parties, gatherings, and events of all sorts. If you could plan your ultimate shindig what would it look like? Who would be there? What would go down?
My ultimate shindig would definitely be a New Year’s Eve party. My mom is a very superstitious person, so growing up she taught me rituals to prepare for NYE. This included jumping on the bed to become taller (I’m 5’3” so I’m pretty sure this didn't work haha), buying round fruits, and putting quarters and cotton balls on the window sill. To carry on the tradition, my shindig would consist of round foods, and my windows would be full of quarters and cotton balls. And the night would have to end in a Celine Dion power ballad karaoke moment.
What’s the most memorable gift you’ve given recently? How are you approaching gift giving this holiday season?
I made a Powerpoint presentation for my friend with a slideshow of our most cringe-worthy photos, and I wrote down my favorite memories with her. She thought it was the funniest thing ever. I’m either a very practical gift-giver or a DIY gift-giver – I love giving practical gifts like socks or hand towels, but I also like to make random crafty things.
DOOZ partnered with Actually Curious to get to know Iris a little bit deeper. The following are a few questions from their thoughtful, question-based card game:
What were the holidays like for you growing up?
I don’t have a large family, so holidays were always pretty low key. I prefer to be quiet, cozy, and sipping hot chocolate instead of partaking in the chaos holiday season.
What foods remind you of home?
I’m Filipino, so my mom cooked Filipino cuisine most of the time. She used to make these desserts called Kutsinta – mini orange, sticky, jelly cakes – that I used to devour as a child and still can't get enough of to this day. Look 'em up!
I wish I could share _____ with human kind.
Imagine yourself in the future. What will your greatest life accomplishment be?
To be creatively fulfilled.
To wrap up the Actually Curious portion of this interview, a featured Taurus question: What's your go-to late night snack?
Double-stuffed Oreos dipped in oat milk!
If you could give someone one DOOZ piece, who would it be and what would you give them? Would you pick their sign?
I would give one of my best friends, Tiffany the Gemini Céleste Bag! She’s my favorite Gemini girl.
Festive string lights or scented candles?
Scented candle always. The mood is always right with a lit candle.
What’s your one beauty secret?
Not really a secret, but I Gua Sha every night with my jade stone. Gua Sha an ancient Chinese technique that helps with blood circulation, encourages lymphatic drainage, and relieves tension on the face. I usually do this while I'm watching a movie on Netflix, and I wake up with a more refreshed face. It’s the best, I promise!
Someone hands you the AUX at a party, what do you play?
- Any songs from Wallow’s new EP, Remote
- Pink Diamond or Claws by Charli XCX
- All My Friends Are Falling in Love by The Vaccines
- You’re Not the One by Sky Ferreira
- Lastly, anything Kate Bush or Harry Styles
How would you style your DOOZ pieces for a night out?
I love head/hair accessories for any season or time of day. My perfect fall night outfit would be a my DOOZ Taurus Tie Dye Bandana on my head, my favorite oversized black leather blazer, ribbed turtleneck, midi skirt with tights, and my favorite penny loafers.
If you were to select one color from the DOOZ celestial rainbow, what would your power color be and why?
It would be Gemini gold. Gold/yellow has been my favorite color for the longest time and a lot of things I own are that color. It’s just a color that makes me happy and it's also a color you don’t see a lot, especially in bags and accessories.
How do you unwind/decompress at the end of the day?
Unwinding at the end of the day is probably my favorite time of all. This is where my inner Taurus comes out the most. I love a warm shower with a good hair mask and lathering myself in my favorite body wash. Skincare is my favorite part and the part I spend the longest on. It usually depends on what my skin needs. Since quarantine, my skin has been suffering badly from the "maskne" and stress. I love to light a candle, make myself some decaf tea and make myself cozy with a book or movie.
Any given day is incomplete without…?
Lately it's been watching a movie! I always try to watch at least one movie a day. I always try to watch one I’ve never seen before, but sometimes I’ll watch a favorite. A couple days ago I rewatched 13 Going on 30 which is one of my favorite movies – I cry every time.
What are your favorite DOOZ pieces and why?
I love, love the Céleste Bags! I love the simple shape of them. My favorite color is the Capricorn. The olive color is perfect and I’m such a sucker for a good 70's color palette.
